Placing a tote bet means you are betting against other people like yourself rather than against a bookmaker. The dividends are decided by dividing the total pool of all bets placed on the race between the number of bets placed on the winning dog, after a set deduction has been taken from the central pool. The deduction from the total pool ensures that more money goes back into greyhound racing from a tote bet than from any other form of greyhound bet.
