How To Bet

Your online guide to tote betting

Whether you are new to tote betting, or an old hand, this section contains the information to help you make your on-line experience as fulfilling as possible. If you are unsure of some of the terms used and what different bets actually mean, then they are explained in this section.

The Odds

Everyone has heard the term 'odds' but, to the newcomer, it's all just a little confusing. In fact, learning about odds is a little like going back to school and sweating over fractions and decimals. Thankfully, most odds are easily worked out. For instance 'evens' means 1-1. You stake £1.00 and, if your player wins, you are paid out £2.00. £1.00 being your stake, £1.00 being your winnings. It's as simple as that!

Types of Bet

THE DOGS (Betting) operates betting on a tote shared pool basis. Dividends for each pool type offered will be calculated by taking the total amount bet, the gross pool, less the operating takeout percentage to determine the net pool. The net pool will then be divided equally by the value of the winning bets to produce the tote dividend.

Winner (Win)
  • To win you must select the greyhound who finishes first in your chosen race.
1st or 2nd (Place)
  • To win you must select the the greyhounds who finish either first or second in your chosen race.
Win & Place (Eachway)
  • This is a simple way of placing a Win and a Place on the same greyhound. The bet will cost 2 x the stake and the payout will be calculated from both the Win and Place parts of the bet.
1st & 2nd (Forecast)
  • To win you must select the two greyhounds who finish first and second in the correct order in your chosen race.
  • A popular bet is a reversed forecast, which means your choices can be first and second in either order, which is two separate bets.
1st, 2nd & 3rd (Trio)
  • To win you must select the three greyhounds who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the correct order in your chosen race.
Five Leg Jackpot (Pick-5)
  • To win you must correctly select the winner of 5 pre-specified races.
  • If one of your selected greyhounds is withdrawn prior to the race commencing then you will be deemed to have chosen the Win pool favourite as your selection for that race.
  • A cancelled race will result in all selections on that race as being winners. If there is a "no race" and the jackpot is subsequently won on that meeting, then the carry-in value is not paid (the dividend is calculated based upon bets placed on that meeting only).
Six Leg Jackpot (Pick-6)
  • To win you must correctly select the winner of 6 pre-specified races.

Note: Unless stated otherwise above the follow points apply to all bets;

  • If one of your selected greyhounds is withdrawn prior to the race commencing then all bets which include this greyhound will be refunded.
  • A cancelled race will result in all bets on that race being refunded.
  • When two or more greyhounds dead heat they become the winning combinations. The net pool is divided by the number of winning combinations into equal parts. The equal parts will be divided by the stakes on each combination and the correct dividend calculated and paid.
  • The result given will be the official steward's result. It will include penalties known at that time but will not take into account appeals or later penalties.
